What the Public Gartner AST Capability Framework Includes

The public 2025 Critical Capabilities abstract shows a broad model of application security testing. Named capability areas include Static AST, Software Composition Analysis, Dynamic AST, Interactive AST, API Security, secrets detection, container security, Infrastructure as Code scanning, pipeline security, secure coding assistance, policy evaluation, prioritization and triage, posture and performance reporting, SBOM lifecycle management and developer education.

The same page identifies multiple use-case perspectives including enterprise, customer, DevSecOps, cloud-native, ASPM and software supply chain security. The practical lesson is that one score cannot represent every buyer's priorities.

Build Your Own Capability Weighting Before Comparing Vendors

Organization profileCapabilities likely to deserve extra weight
Large enterprisePolicy, portfolio reporting, language breadth, integrations, governance and scalable triage.
DevSecOps-heavyFast pull-request and IDE feedback, pipeline integration, developer remediation and automation.
Cloud-nativeContainer, IaC, secrets, API testing and cloud workload context.
Regulated softwareSBOM lifecycle, audit evidence, policy enforcement, SCA and reporting.
API-centricAPI security testing, DAST and authenticated flows, secrets and runtime API visibility integration.
Supply-chain focusedSCA, malicious packages, SBOM, provenance and third-party governance.

Coverage vs. Precision vs. Workflow

A platform can find more issues and still produce worse security outcomes if developers cannot trust or remediate the findings. Test three dimensions separately: coverage (what can it find), precision (how much noise it creates), and workflow (how efficiently the organization can fix and verify issues).

  • Seed known vulnerable code and dependencies so coverage is measurable.
  • Measure confirmed false positives and duplicates.
  • Track time from finding to developer understanding and fix.
  • Check whether prioritization uses reachability, exploitability and application context.
  • Verify that exceptions and suppressions are auditable and expire when appropriate.

API Security Inside the AST Capability Model

Gartner's public capability list explicitly includes API Security, which reflects the reality that modern applications expose much of their risk through APIs. AST platforms may test API definitions or running endpoints, but runtime business-logic abuse still requires a different form of visibility.

For API-heavy environments, add explicit tests for OpenAPI and GraphQL coverage, authentication flows, authorization tests, API inventory synchronization and how pre-production findings connect to production telemetry. See OpenAPI security review and BOLA and IDOR API security.

When AST Platform Consolidation Helps—and When It Hurts

Consolidation can reduce duplicated agents, scanners, dashboards and policies. It can also create a lowest-common-denominator problem if a broad platform is weak in the one testing mode that matters most to a critical application. Use consolidation as an operating-model decision, not a goal by itself.

A sensible approach is to standardize the common majority of applications while allowing specialist controls for exceptional technologies or risk. The evaluation should include data portability so findings can be correlated in a central ASPM or SIEM layer without requiring every scanner to come from the same vendor.

Critical Capabilities PoC Design

  1. Choose applications representing at least three major technology and risk profiles.
  2. Weight capability areas before the PoC so scoring cannot be changed after seeing results.
  3. Seed known findings across first-party code, dependencies, secrets and infrastructure.
  4. Test both developer feedback and central security governance.
  5. Run authenticated API and DAST scenarios where relevant.
  6. Measure SBOM creation or ingestion and vulnerability response.
  7. Exercise exceptions, policy gates and audit reporting.
  8. Include migration effort from existing tools in the final score.

Turn the AST Capability List Into a Weighted Evaluation Model

The public capability list is broad enough that a simple “supports/does not support” spreadsheet will favor large suites regardless of quality. Group the capabilities by the security outcome you need, then weight them against your application portfolio.

OutcomeRelevant capability areasEvidence to collect

Then run the same seeded test set through every shortlisted platform. The purpose of Critical Capabilities-style evaluation is not to reward the longest feature list; it is to determine which product performs best against the capabilities and operating model that matter to your organization.

How Ammune Complements AST Critical Capabilities

Ammune adds the runtime API-security dimension that AST programs often need after deployment: API discovery from traffic, behavioral analysis, business-logic attack detection and forensic evidence. It does not replace source, dependency or IaC scanning.

The strongest architecture connects pre-production findings to production exposure: a vulnerable endpoint that is internet-facing, handles sensitive data and is actively abused should receive different operational priority than dormant code.

AST Critical Capabilities Checklist

  • Verify current Gartner publication status before quoting 2026 scores.
  • Weight capabilities by your application portfolio and use cases.
  • Measure coverage, precision and workflow separately.
  • Include SAST, SCA, DAST/API, secrets, IaC, container and pipeline needs.
  • Test portfolio reporting and policy governance at scale.
  • Evaluate SBOM lifecycle and software supply-chain workflows.
  • Measure developer remediation experience.
  • Allow specialist tools where broad platforms are insufficient.
  • Connect AST findings to runtime exposure and API behavior.
  • Score migration and ongoing administration, not only detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a public 2026 Gartner Critical Capabilities for Application Security Testing report?

As of October 10, 2026, Gartner’s public research calendar lists October 7, 2026 for the AST Critical Capabilities update, while the publicly indexed research page available to this review remains the October 13, 2025 edition.

What capability areas does Gartner publicly list for AST?

The public framework includes SAST, SCA, DAST, IAST, API security, secrets, containers, IaC, pipeline security, SBOM, posture and triage, and developer enablement among other areas.

How should I compare AST vendors?

Weight capabilities by your use cases, then measure coverage, precision, workflow, governance, migration and cost in a proof of concept.

Is a broad AST platform always better than specialist tools?

No. Platform consolidation can improve operations, but a specialist tool can still be justified where a critical technology or risk requires deeper capability.

How does runtime API security relate to AST?

AST identifies weaknesses before or during delivery. Runtime API security observes real production use, business logic, abuse and behavioral anomalies after deployment.
